The data
Why you can trust the numbers
-
Every figure carries its accounts date
Each headcount is shown with the date of the accounts it came from, on screen and in every export. Nothing is estimated: a figure is read from filed accounts, or it isn’t there.
-
No figure filed is never counted as zero
A company with no readable headcount is marked “No figure filed”: unknown, not small. A filed zero stays a real answer.
-
Accounts are added daily
A company that files today has its new figures here tomorrow. Company details come from the register Companies House publishes each month.
How the data works, in detail: where each field comes from, how regions are worked out, and what’s in every export.

Where does the data come from?
From Companies House, the UK’s registrar of companies. Company details come from the register it publishes each month; employee counts are read from the accounts companies file with it, by a deterministic parser, with nothing estimated. Firmo is an independent service and is not affiliated with Companies House.
What does the employee count mean?
The average number of people the company employed over the year its accounts cover, as the company stated it. Directors count, so a figure of 1 or 2 often means the people running the company; from about 5 up it describes a real team. A filed 0 is a real answer, usually a company run by its directors. Growth compares that figure with the previous year’s, stated in the same accounts.
Why do some companies have no figure?
Only accounts filed electronically carry a figure software can read. Accounts filed on paper, older filings and companies yet to file give none. Those companies are marked No figure filed: it means unknown, not small, and a list with a size filter leaves them out rather than guessing.
How up to date is it?
Two sources, two rhythms. The register of companies is refreshed monthly, when Companies House publishes its snapshot, so a new or dissolved company can take up to a month to show. Filed accounts are added daily: a company that files today has its new employee count here tomorrow. Even so, each figure is only as fresh as the accounts it came from, which can cover a period that ended a year or more before they were filed. That’s why every figure carries the date of those accounts.
What do I get for £25?
A CSV of up to 1,500 companies that match your search, emailed to the address you pay with and yours to download again for 30 days. Each row has the company’s name, number, status, incorporation date, SIC codes, registered office and region, plus its employee count and how it changed, every figure dated. You can limit the list to a size band or to companies that grew. It holds no personal contact details: no names of people, emails or phone numbers.
Is there a contract or a sales call?
No. A list is a one-off payment of £25: no account, no subscription, no demo. Unlimited is £199 a month, or £1,908 a year (£159 a month), for up to 3 people who each sign in with their own email, and it can be cancelled any time.
